Leaders - what we need now(?).

With the strains of our everyday work lives,

compounded by global events

and political uncertainty that is dividing us,

it is a good time to examine

what we need now” as leaders and followers by taking aim at Pause in order to forge new Partnerships that can advance our disposition.

This year has been a rebuilding year for my team organizationally, setting the spotlight on a new course to meet our growing challenges amidst change. The challenge of it all feels akin to the condition that is facing our present-day electorate where there is divide and uncertainty.

What I’m about to describe may ring familiar with you as a leader. In times of organizational change the greatest challenges are often fraught with constituents who by nature cart individual opinions, experiences and intentions. Constituents come from all walks and bring with them their own framework from their journeys.

Left unattended to in the workplace, however, they will converge naturally towards diverse directions.  It takes leadership courage, skill and vision to amalgamate individuals to form a Partnership – that feeling that we’re all in it together, with shared collective goals – to act like a real team.

In such times I’m reminded of the power of both empathy and kindness – applied towards self and others. Just when the desire hits you as a leader to want to try and take command of organizational direction and control of individual agendas, we need to Pause. Leaders can’t do things alone. We need the hearts and minds of all our Partners.

We should carefully consider the power of Pause especially as we approach the end of the year finish line. We may want to simply push through it. On the contrary, if all we are striving to do is finish we will never succeed at building commitment and achieving excellence together.

As we approach the season of giving, what we need now may just be the strength that ensues from acts of empathy and kindness.
